Album Review: Ruby Fields – Been Doin’ It For a Bit
Ruby Fields' honesty and affability make this a comforting listen, even when she sings about her life closing in. She reflects on defining life moments: mistreatment from boys in her youth, disillusionment with the church, even confronting death while "sitting in a gutter, looking up laughing with a mouth full of blood" (Clothes Line). That's not to say there aren't emotional highs on this record– she celebrates friendship across Kitchen, and flatteringly likens her bandmates to worms, lifting each other up at difficult times ("One look at these worms has me feeling top shelf"). This is a great album, and one that I hope will continue to grow on me as I mature.
“I used to be scared of midnight silhouettes, that my coatrack was a murderer standing by my bed / But these days I’m so lonely, instead of a scream, I’d probably ask him to hold me instead.”
